Centuries from opener Tom Latham and former captain Kane Williamson helped New Zealand take a first innings lead in the first Test against Pakistan here on Wednesday. Williamson had relinquished the captaincy of his team before the first Test tour of Pakistan after almost 20 years. He scored his first century in international cricket in almost two years after being relieved of the captaincy burden. He is currently playing on 105, helping New Zealand score 440 for six at the end of the third day’s play and take a two-run lead over Pakistan.

Pakistan had scored 338 runs in the first innings. Latham played an inning of 113 runs, which is his 13th century in Test cricket. He got New Zealand off to a great start by sharing a 183-run partnership for the first wicket with Devon Conway (92). Apart from these, Tom Blundell (47) and Daryl Mitchell (42) also played useful innings. Both of them made half-century partnerships with Williamson taking advantage of Pakistan’s poor fielding.

For Pakistan, mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed took three for 143 and left-arm spinner Nouman Ali took two for 137. Wicketkeeper Sarfaraz Ahmed, who returned to the Test team after four years, gave life to Williamson on personal totals of 15 and 21 runs. The former New Zealand skipper once even resorted to DRS against Pagbadha which went in his favour. Williamson took advantage of this to score his first Test century since Hamilton’s 238 against Pakistan in January 2021. This is his overall 25th Test century.
