NRAI general secretary Sultan Singh told PTI on Monday that the election process was to begin on May 28 but following objections from the Uttar Pradesh State Rifle Association (UPSRA), the process would be delayed.

The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has postponed the process of electing its new president following ‘objections’ raised by a state association. NRAI general secretary Sultan Singh told PTI on Monday that the election process was to begin on May 28 but following objections from the Uttar Pradesh State Rifle Association (UPSRA), the process would be delayed. The post of chairman is vacant after Raninder Singh went on ‘long leave’ following the instructions of the Sports Ministry. According to the National Sports Code, the heads of National Sports Federations (NSFs) cannot hold office for more than 12 years.

Raninder has completed his 12 years as the President from December 29, 2010 to December 29, 2022 and as per the code he cannot continue as the President of NRAI. Sultan Singh said no one has applied for the top post due to the postponement of the election process. He said, “Objections were being raised time and again by the UPSRA. He wrote three-four letters. We thought we would sort out their issue in two-three days but the returning officer (retired Supreme Court judge Arjit Pasayat) said it was necessary for him to investigate all these (objections).

So he wanted to adjourn the process at this juncture. So we said ok. It is expected that the date of (fresh) elections will be announced within a week. NRAI senior vice-president Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo is in charge of day-to-day functioning since Raninder went on leave.
