Joshna to lead Indian challenge at Squash World Cup

Saurav Ghosal and Joshna Chinappa will spearhead the Indian challenge at the Squash World Cup to be held here from June 13 to 17. Giving this information on Monday, the Squash Rackets Federation of India (SFRI) said that the tournament will be organized at Express Avenue Mall and ‘Indian Squash and Triathlon Academy’. Nine countries will participate in the tournament. Apart from host India, it includes Hong Kong, China, Japan, Malaysia, Egypt, South Africa, Australia and Colombia. The last season of the World Cup in India was also held in Chennai in 2011.

SFRI Honorary Life President N Ramachandran said, “I am delighted to announce that Chennai will once again host the prestigious SDAT-WSF Squash World Cup from June 13 to 17. This will be the fourth season of the tournament. This time, gender equality and points system have been reformed in the tournament. As against two men and one woman per team in previous seasons, this time two men and two women players will compete. Each match will be played in the format of ‘Best of Five Games’. The tournament will start with a round robin pool stage followed by knockout stage matches. Ghoshal, Abhay Singh, Joshna and Tanvi Khanna will represent India. Tamil Nadu Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin handed over a check of Rs 1.5 crore to Ramachandran for organizing the tournament and said that the central atrium of Express Avenue Mall would be made suitable for the game, where spectators would also be able to enjoy it.
