The BCCI is understood to be in the process of shortlisting the names for the interview and the chairman of the previous selection committee, Chetan Sharma, is very likely to feature in the list along with his Central Zone colleague Harvinder Singh.

The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising Ashok Malhotra, Sulakshana Naik and Jatin Paranjpe is likely to meet on December 29 in Mumbai to interview potential candidates for the new national selection committee. The BCCI is understood to be in the process of shortlisting the names for the interview and the chairman of the previous selection committee, Chetan Sharma, is very likely to feature in the list along with his Central Zone colleague Harvinder Singh. A BCCI source told ‘PTI-Bhasha’ on the condition of confidentiality, “If everything goes well, the CAC meeting is to be held in Mumbai on December 29.” There will also be an interview of the selected names. ,

Meanwhile, Chetan and his committee are understood to have been given an extension of one more week. During this, he has been asked to keep an eye on the Ranji Trophy matches. Chetan and his colleague Harvinder were in Delhi to watch the home team’s match against Tamil Nadu, while Sunil Joshi was in Hyderabad to watch the match between Assam and Hyderabad. “He was informed yesterday itself that he needs to watch the matches of this round,” the source said.

It is, however, understood that both Chetan and Harvinder are likely to be interviewed by the CAC again and both may continue as selectors from their respective regions. BCCI sources following the development believe that the board officials have not found a large number of suitable names for the post as Rs 1.25 crore for the chairman and Rs 1 crore for other members to attract the best talent. A package (salary) is not considered attractive. The source said, “Chetan has a good chance of continuing in the selection committee as chairman or at least as a representative of North Zone. The fact is that the BCCI is unable to come up with the names of any top level ex-players for the post. Why would Chetan apply if he didn’t have a chance? They must have got some assurances.
